I've always had trouble finding a good quality pair of shoes that are COMFORTABLE without sacrificing my taste for style. In my search for the perfect pair of shoes, I came across a company called ECCO - a Danish shoemaker that makes high-quality footwear for men, women and children. I love their eye-catching designs and craftsmanship. They have this unique process called direct-inject which provides a lightweight, yet flexible and strong outsole providing superior cushioning, stability and comfort. Just what my feet need for a long day at the office. My first purchase was the Washington Tall Boot. I saw it in an issue of Vogue and fell in love with its elegant style. It is the most comfortable boot I've ever owned! I also love its design and versatility. I can wear it with just about every outfit in my closet. I also own a pair of their winter boots, running, golf, and dress shoes. They are all very comfortable.

ECCO just launched its 2007 spring/summer collection featuring a variety of new styles in fresh new colors - just in time for warm weather.

If you've never heard of ECCO, check them out online at www.eccousa.com. Happy shopping!

Chloe is known for producing "it" bags of the season, including the famous Paddington handbag. Do you find their shoes equally trendsetting? Here is the Chloe Patent Oxford shoe. The heel will add a staggering 4 2/5 inches to your height and while the five eyes look like they should have laces threaded between them, these are really laceless shoes.

How to buy shoes straight from the manufacturer and save atleast 60%

Bigshoebazaar.com is an Indian online shoe store selling thousands of high quality shoes

at extremely low prices. Its probably the only place on earth where you can buy a top quality leather shoe for 30$ a pair. And whats facinating is that these same pairs selling in the US would cost atleast 100$ a pair

Around 90% of the shoes sold in the US are manufactured in India or china where they are made for as low at 20$ a pair. For example, Lotus Bawa is an Indian company that makes shoes for Reebok and Adidas and sell them for around 100$ a pair which is the normal MRP.

But when they make exactly same shoes and sell them under their own brand name, it costs only 30$ a pair.

So its actually like buying shoes straight from the manufacturer and costs atleast 3 times less. For example there's this boot by Red Tape that’s selling for 2400 rupees, that’s 60$, this same shoe is actually selling for 165$ in the US. Same brand , same product, different prices.

Shipping from India costs around 20$ a pair, and if you buy more pairs it comes down to around 40$ only. So even with the shipping etc, you get a BIG saving.

Check out the website at http://www.bigshoebazaar.com , they got a special section for international orders and you can see all the products in Dollars, Pounds, Rupees and Euros.

Some of the coolest brands on the site are Woodland, Lee Cooper, iD , Reebok , Red Tape, Liberty and Dr.Scholls.

Bigshoebazaar.com : http://www.bigshoebazaar.com

The buckle is a piping hot accessory for our shoes--nevermind it's been around for ages. No designer has been able to resist its allure.

One buckle is good, but two is even better (as evidenced by these humble Danskos), and triple, why, is positively fabulous. Haute couture seems particularly fond of the triple-buckle motif. To boot: the triple-buckle Marc Jacobs flats I discussed only a couple of days ago. Chloe also has some triple-buckle power (somebody on Stylepad saw those triple-buckle boots on Kate Hudson, but I can't find the post now).

However, these Chloe Mary-Janes to-the-third-power flats fall into the category, 'Would you wear these?' In theory, the combination red vintage leather + Mary Jane design=cuteness (why, I myself own two pairs of red Mary Janes, even though, mercifully, I don't live in a perpetual Little Red Riding Hood story). These, on the other hand, are not exactly cute--rather, edgy, innovative, and, let's face it, hard to wear (I'm frowning trying to imagine them accessorized with anything in my wardrobe... I'm having a really hard time). Oh, not to mention that they're a trifle too expensive--abut $650, if my Euro-Dollar conversion is correct.

So... would you wear these?
If you've waited until now to consider a pair, consider yourself lucky! They're half off at Net-a-Porter, going for $226. Their purple cousin benefit from a less generous sale, but a sale nevertheless, going for $339. These days, I've definitely got Marc Jacobs on the mind....

Experiment a little. Stray from the tried and true and venture into the cutting edge and eyebrow-raising territory. Trade the pretty for the edgy, the cute for the bold and daring. Play with her image and choose the right accessories that say, "Hey, this is no ordinary pretty girl! This is a woman who knows who she is and can take stylish chances whenever she feels like it, instead of going along with the crowd!"

If you have days when you want to break the mold (ok, not shatter it, but perhaps crack it a little), do I have the shoe for you! Behold these low ankle brogue shoes in an antiqued metallic leather from Rocco Pistolesi (Spring/Summer 2007 collection). With a significant, but not over the top lift in the form of a sturdy stacked 2 1/4" heel, and the perforated details, these shoes will help you stand out in a crowd. They sport just the right amount of gender bending and fashionable detail to make your outfit (and you, of course!) instantly interesting and unique.

Dress them up with your fave black or gray jeans, a newsboy cap, and an oversized something (bag, shawl, shades), and you're ready to make a lasting impression. Available from Luisaviaroma for approx. $500.
Wait, don't answer! I think I know! Super-extra-hyper-maxi-ultra-pretty! With a cherry on top!

These are, of course, the famous Marc Jacobs 'mouse' shoes (see, that little whisper of a whisker straddling the cute-as-a-button vamp? that's it! that's the hint of mousiness!)

However, there's nothing mousy about these navy blue velvet flats. In fact, the only word properly describing them is adorable. Don't even dare to disagree. You know that, deep down, you like them too.

And so, I couldn't resist. I snatched the last pair on Yoox for $128. Don't judge me. I gave in to the power of the mouse shoe.

In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy had magical ruby red slippers. My version of the red slippers are these suede flats made by one of my favorite clothing designers, Nanette Lepore (see My Look post for Wonderland dress). Normally, red shoes might be a bit too loud for my personal style however, these flats are just too cute to ignore. I love the Peek a Bow that is adorned with brass hardware. I'd certainly feel a bit of magic if I had these slippers.

Available at Neiman Marcus for $160.

On a side topic, I found this Find Article entitled "Dorothy and the power of the femain imagination" to be an interesting read. Who knew that there was just deep undertones to the red slippers? I'll have to rent it again just to jog my memory and to see if I can relate.

Ever gone out in an outfit that is sans any pockets. Don't feel like carrying around a clutch or bag? These pair of stylish Report Victory boots actually comes with a side cargo pocket. Judging by the pic, seems like a decent workaround for carrying around the spare key, bills, and maybe even a credit card. I'm not sure this is a faux pocket but wouldn't it be great if it were actually a real pocket?

Available on Zappos for $121

These have to be the most GORGEOUS pair of boots I've seen in quite a while. Sure, they're a little bit austentatious, but only slightly so. If you ask me, thse boots are the epitome of the word "style", or atleast my definition of style. Why? Because they take something very ordinary and add just a touch of something else that makes them unique, and make them stand out. If they were bright purple or covered in fur and grommets, then they would be austentatous. The Valentino boots are on sale for $583, down from $1390 at SaksFifthAvenue.com. If I had that kind of cash just lying around I would totally waste it on these boots. But then again that would mean I would have to wear them over top of the hem of my jeans, and I just don't have the guts to do that yet.

Now that Zappos has gone all commando on us and only has 10% sales on anything (why? oh why??), I've been forced to shop shoe sales elsewhere, and so it is that I bumped into this new site: Endless.com. Not only do they have a great selection of brands, but these days they include FREE OVERNIGHT SHIPPING (and 110% price guarantee, just like Zappos). That's right: order it today, you'll get it tomorrow. Free. He-he. They're an offshoot of Amazon, which, hey, can only be a good sign, right?

There are other features I like on this website. The search function, for example, allows you to selectively search only the brands you want, something I actually was looking for (and never got on Zappos). All the other search parameters (color, size, type, width, price range) also apply--but you can limit them to only 2, or 10 brands of your choice. The images are also pretty nice, and rival Zappos's in that not only do they offer all possible views and angles, but there is a zoom function on each one of those views. Pretty sweet!

Even sweeter are the deals they offer. Today I found some really great offers on Claudia Ciuti footwear, such as these stone patent flats, with the graciously unexpected detail of a semi-buckle on the vamp, and the promise of style and comfort in every bite, uhhh, I mean, step:

They are reduced from $275 to $110. Not bad at all!

I also wouldn't mind getting my hands on these babies:

These are Claudia Ciuti 'Dustin' boots, suede and patent, down to $200 from $482. Very stylish, in my opinion, and very comfy (I already have a pair of Claudia Ciuti wedge suede boots that are really, really comfortable).

They don't have such great deals on bags, but I really liked their selection of handbags. Will take a closer look as soon as I finish this post.

Well, happy shopping, you groovers!

Happy New Year to all fashion lovers (and since I'm in a good mood, why not, to fashion non-lovers alike)! Hope one of your New Year's Resolutions was to always look and feel fabulous, no matter what. I know that's one of mine!

These days I've been craving boots, and in particular tall (knee-high). It's the weather, of course, but also something else--a deep need for sturdy, comfortable, stylish footwear that you can rely on during these cold winter months.

Buying boots is not something I do every day. Boots--well made knee-high boots, that is--are expensive and I have to weigh my options most carefully. So what do I look for in a boot? Well, a few things.

1) Comfort. Why, of course! Cold weather is uncomfortable enough for me to also worry about constraining, painful, ill-fitting, or flimsy shoes. My knee-high boots have to keep me warm, comfortable, on my feet. I have to be able to move with ease and a certain obliviousness to the vagaries of cold weather.

I can't depend on boots with stiletto heels (well, I can't wear them, plain and simple)--and if you saw In Her Shoes, you'll remember Cameron Diaz walking through Rittenhouse Square (downtown Philly, where I live) and breaking the spike heel of a Jimmy Choo bootie. Now, let that be a warning for all of you who want to wear high heels on ice! :)

2) Quality. As I said, knee-high boots are an expensive purchase I don't do every day. In fact, I would expect to wear those boots for quite a few years (I'd say, a minimum of 5-6 years, a max. of 10-15). For that, I have to have sturdy leather, flawless construction, a solid sole (leather or rubber), good lining and insulation, sturdy zipper, etc. Usually, most of these are more or less guaranteed with a name brand, and it's a hit and miss with anything less than that. It's almost always a miss with, say, Payless Shoes. So, you can't really skimp on a good pair of tall leather boots. You won't regret it a few weeks, months, or even years down the road.

3) Styling. This is a delicate matter. Fashionistas are prone to choosing style over function, and I'm no exception. But since I'm not willing to sacrifice 1) and 2) above, style has to come in the shape of [comfort+quality], and that's where my choices start to be severely limited. I have to ask myself, since I want to get as long a wear as possible from these boots, will this be likely to be in style next year? a few years from now? How off-beat am I willing to go? How timeless can this style be without looking boring or outdated? Would I be likely to wear pink boots with gold trim 3 years from now, or should I stick with a more classic option? Where am I most likely to wear these boots--casually, functions, what?

So yes, I prefer to get 2 or 3 pairs of tall boots that will take me through many winters rather than a handful that I will toss out next season.

These Costume National boots from Yoox fulfill basically all my criteria. They have a sturdy, comfortable heel of just about 2", the leather is good quality, and the styling is very chic and fashionable without running the risk of getting outdated any time soon. The price is rather high (just under $400), but in my opinion, well worth it since I'll probably get many years of use out of them. They are also a good mix of casual and fashion, rendering them perfect for just about any occasion, from a stroll in the park to a fancy party.

Hi there! Hope you're all enjoying your holiday sales. I know I am (hint: if the sale assistants at Banana Republic know you by your first name, that's probably a sign you spend way too much time--and money--in that store). Ahem. But were was I? Oh, I know. My renewed obsession with animal prints.

It all started innocently enough with my routine browsing of the Neiman Marcus online collection (there's no Neiman in the vicinity of Philly, so yep, I have to go online). And so it was that I discovered these faaahbulous Lambertson Truex tall leopard print suede boots and I started drooling with desire. I know they're $645, thank you, but! gorgeous! sex-ay! sensible heel! Can you imagine yourself slinking through the urban jungle in these? Well, I can, and it's an image I'm very fond of.

It kinda went downhill from there, as I discovered these Dolce & Gabbana zebra print loafers, and my heart started pumping dangerously fast:

So by the time I stumbled across these cream zebra print Manolo Blahnik flats, I would have sold my soul to the devil for one of these pairs. Ok, maybe not 'eternal damnation' sold, but perhaps in a 'work for Anna Wintour for a month' way.

I do have in fact a pair of sensible Donald J. Pliner leopard print loafers with black leather trim and red sole (these), but somehow they don't feel either glamorous nor over-the-top, like I feel right now. I feel a shopping spree coming up....

Reneé. They're laced with ho-ho-ho's all around and sport the picture of your favorite fat guy on the vamp, tastefully surrounded by holly leaves. Oh, there's also an acrylic heel with red and white tassels, for your full holiday enjoyment. It can all be yours for $53--33% off at Nordstroms. But my suggestion is to skip them altogether. I doubt that even Santa would approve of this tacky footwear--leave it for the elves, dear!
Hope you've had your share of Christmas dishes---I know I did, and won't be looking to, ahem, buy any clothes in MY ORIGINAL SIZE any time soon, if you know what I mean. But, the good news is that I haven't changed my shoe size--thank God!--and I can take some satisfaction in the post-Christmas shopping rush.

And so I propose to you these etched leather tall boots from Anna Sui, in a royal shade of navy. These will allow you to strut your stuff (even the recently acquired few extra pounds) with majestic dignity, with the right touch of flirt. The sturdy heel will allow you to stand tall and confident and the intricate patterns will keep passers-by infinitely interested in your gams. Definitely a show-stopper. Grab them at Anthropologie for $348.
They're ridiculously comfortable and I love the patent leather. I originally wanted the one with the gold cross, but they didn't have it, and I actually like that this one will go with more outfits. The white stitching is actually cute when it's on a foot. I can't wait to take these out. I will wear them everywhere.

Retro chic, with luscious leather, rounded toe, and the funky triangular low heels--very very refreshing, indeed (also available in a cheerful canary yellow). These are shoes in which to bring the good times on--and maybe, just maybe, steal a kiss under the mistletoe. The sale price ($160, down from $260) also sweetens the deal.

I'm miffed about these satin Kate Spade Mary-Janes (available in pink or lime green on Bluefly). On the one hand, the concept is right: they're made of a glorious satin, beribboned, a cute color, look comfortable, and they're Mary-Janes, of course (one of my favorite styles). Even the price is sweet, just under $100, down from $275. However, it's the oversized ribbon that's souring the deal for me. It's overpowering the vamp and it's WAY in your face. It's too much piled together, in other words: the neon color, the shiny fabric, the huge ribbon...aahhh....saccharine overload...must...avert....eye....

Ballet madness: Dance with Maloles

Look, I confess, I've been know to badmouth ballet flats on occasion. I admit it. Most of them are, indeed, a little too flat to be truly comfortable, making no accommodation for those of us with high arches.

However, I've been most intrigued by a Spanish brand, Maloles, which does mostly high-end espadrilles but not only. Let's agree, the Spanish do have a wonderful sense of style. You need just watch an Almodovar movie and see those stylish interiors--or better yet, go to Spain and see for yourself!.

I have a beautiful pair of Blay shoes, and a pair of great Kowalski sneakers, both Spanish brands, and I think they're funky, colorful, youthful, and in many ways quite innovative. Several other well known brands come to mind--Castaner and Pedro Garcia, among others. And let's not even count such designer labels as Balenciaga and Oscar de la Renta.

So yeah, I'm sold on Spanish style, and so I believe it's time for me to try Maloles, a brand that has piqued my interest for quite a while. And this might just be the season to save big on their ballet flats--which don't come cheap (usually in the $250-300 category). But who in their right mind could resist these lilac polka dot suede ballet flats, with gathered vamp topped with the most delicate white bow? And they're only $89, down from $225, at Saks.

Or what do you say about these breezy lilac mesh peep-toe espadrilles, with gingham trim and pin and flower detail, and the subtlest of wedges? They're now $114, down from 285, also at Saks.

I'm also drawn to these classic black and white canvas espadrilles with white leather bow detail, now $120, down from $300. I know it's too early to be thinking of summer, but with savings like these, and style like this, who can resist?

The jury is out, however, as far as I'm concernced, on these unusual suede Maloles flats, reminscent of the Spanish Renaissance high collars, perhaps?

(As usual, I love the Anthropologie description of their product: "Silky suede wears a fanciful high collar of dotted tulle trimmed in velvet and sprinkled with silvery grommets.") They're still quite pricey, even on sale ($250, down from $378), but hey, you're guaranteed to score major originality points with them. I'm still trying to come up with an outfit for them, but for now I'm at a loss.

Still, three out of four ain't that bad! I think it's time to get my grubby little hands on a pair of Maloles before the sales end. Better hurry!

It's the delicate tooled leather, with beautiful details, in a marshmellow-cream color, or the silver whipstitching, or the wearable 2 1/4" stacked heel--or perhaps all of the above. Whatever it is, I would gladly dance my night away in these--preferrably paired with diaphanous, gauzy, flesh-hued gown with fluttering sleeves. And a tiara. Or not. At any rate, If you've got $400 to spare, they're available at Anthropologie.

And then I shop like crazy and wrap every gift in red and green paper with gold bows.

If you've gotten into the spirit of Christmas, too, let me offer for contemplation this beautiful and cheerful pair of Christian Lacroix slingback. A comfortable heel, a fun black-white-red polka dot+tassels combo. Simply poifekt. Less perfect is the price ($574, ouch!), but hey, maybe Santa can be generous this year, no? One can only dream!

These boots on Kate Hudson really give an otherwise simple outfit a little rock n' roll edge. Metal buttons decorate an otherwise plain pair of gray boots.

For a similiar style, you can purchase these Thomas Wylde boots on ShopBop for 1.798 €. I have no idea how much that amounts to in US dollars. If you look closely, you'll find small skulls cuffs on the boot surrounded by a cross. Hip and edgy.

I've been admiring these bitonal suede "Pessy Sue" Ashley Dearborn pumps for quite a while, but only toda is the Bluefly slashing the price to almost bearable territory: $152, down 60% from $375.

The heel is only 2 1/4", which is still high for me--in a stiletto, no less--but I would imagine quite acceptable for most fashionistas. What is striking about these pumps is, of course, the unexpected taupe-purple combination, which is at once daring and subtle. I love that the shoe doesn't fall into the 'yawn' category but makes a statement with those purple suede covered heels and ultra-elegant lines. Chic, sophisticated, and slightly edgy--in other words, deliciously perfect.

All I could think of when I saw these rubber Cinderella pumps from Kate Spade was, where were these shoes when I was playing dress-up? I can almost feel the excitement of the little girls who finds these in her mom's forbidden shoe closet, and pairs them with some glittery pearls and rhinestone buckles and what not.

(As an aside, have you noticed how playing dress-up as a child is primarily about accessories? That's probably because you don't really fit in any grown-up clothes, but the piling-on of accessories--necklaces, bracelts, rings, hairpins, handbags, shoes, you name it--will still allow you to pretend. Hence, us fashionistas' continued love with accessories well into our ripe age.)

So that's why I'm torn about these pumps, which, you must admit, are as cute as a button. Part of me says that I probably wouldn't wear them in a million years, but the little girl in me is just dying to take them for a spin. And at under $50 (they're 68% off Bluefly today), that's not that inconceivable...

No matter--it's the season of all things glitzy, so I'm allowed.

And so it is that if I had my druthers, and $565 of completely disposable income, and I had to wear ONE gold shiny thing for the holidays, it would be these fabulous Taryn Rose slingback peep-toe pumps, for sale at Neiman Marcus. I love the rhinestone vamp, the copious arch support (check out the inside of the sole, if you don't believe me), the delicate rhinestone buckle, and the modest but uplifting 2 1/4 inches worth of heel. Can I get a Hallelujah?

Now, somebody hide that credit card from me, fast...

Ok, the last question may have not been prompted by the boots, nor was it tempered, but if you saw the latest James Bond, you will understand my sudden, burning crush.

Anyway, where was I? Ah, the boots. No matter how over the top they may be, what with the Western flair and did I mention the gold? you might have noticed it too--I can't help but think that these boots are faaahhhbulous. And if there's any time of the year you should wear them, why, it's right now, just in time for over-the-top Christmas festivities, not to mention Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Festivus. Plus, they will appeal to the Scrooge-crowd as they are 31% off, going for $341 on Zappos. Shine on, you crazy boot, you!

I'm not a huge fan of ballet flats because, apart from their being too flat to comfortably accomodate a high arch, they are often cut narrow and shallow (out of less forgiving materials), ostensibly to replicate the elongated, elegant look of a ballerina's foot. Which is all fine in principle, until I have to walk in them and suffer. Wincing and grimacing do NOT make for a graceful ballerina, I tell you what! I have this problem with a beautiful pair of Delman flats (kiwi suede and patent cap), which rank high on the discomfort level (I wore them once, last year, and then relegated them to a dark, quiet corner of my closet. Sigh.).

I complained about this issue some time ago, at which point someone directed me to French Sole, as basically the only ballet-flat makers on the market who knew how to do it right. At over $200 a pair, though, and without being able to try them on (I was unable to find this brand in stores), I balked at the idea.

However, this morning, after I had to run some errands downtown Philly, I stopped by the local Daffy's, one of our two big discount stores in Center City (the other is Loehmann's). I have never purchased shoes at this store for some reason--I was too picky, I guess. However, this a.m. I was delighted to find and buy this Passport quilted nappa/patent toe style, for only $63 (down from $225). I found them to be super-comfortable, with good arch support, and a soft, supple leather upper that rendered them practically weightless--like I was wearing nothing, I swear! The craftsmanship and materials were also pretty good, and the quilted style, harking back to the famous Chanel flats, is also adorable.

The only word of caution: they are sized big. I am ordinarily a 10, rarely a 9.5 (and that mostly in sandals); however, the 10 in these ran very big, while the 9 fit perfectly. A 9! I can never wear a 9! I'm guessing that's because the upper leather is so permissive (yes, even to those of you with wider feet). All in all, a happy purchase I can't wait to wear.

They're BrunoMagli 'Revelin' nappa leather flats, with leather flower detail on the vamp, and a hefty 65% discount on Zappos ($87, down from $244). The simplicity and elegance of the lines, the cuteness of the detail, the lingering promise of comfort...aaaah! I still have my reservations about BrunoMagli shoes (often too narrow, too constricting), but I'm itching to try these ones--they look positively delicious.

Some women hate it. Some women can't get enough of it. And some, like me, tolerate it in moderation--which, give me some toe cleavage as long as my shoes aren't going to fly off my feet if I want to move a little faster.

Take the shoe on the left--gorgeous, no? You might recognize the design from the Sigerson Morrison collection--there's a whole line of these flats, in plush velvets and shiny leathers, with gorgeous glass beads on the vamp (btw, these brown ones are currently on sale at Neiman Marcus). I really, really, really want to like these shoes. Everything about them indicates fashion, luxe, beauty, sophistication, and the lack of heel is a gentle nod to comfort.

However, there are two problems for me: the flatter-than-the-Texas-panhandle sole, which, at least for me, is pretty uncomfortable (no arch support!); and the HUGE toe-cleavage allowed by the vamp. That shoe is destined hang on for dear life to your tootsies. I'm a fast walker; I doubt I can keep these on for more than a few seconds without much toe-curling and general discomfort. As about orthotics? Forget it. They will clamp out of these shoes faster than you can say Sigerson Morrison. I have a relatively similar pair of Delman ballet flats that turned out to be pretty much unbearable for exactly this reason.

And what is it about toe-cleavage anyway? I know a woman's feet are supposed to be sexy when properly displayed--so the 'cleavage' is a tease, a glimpse of nudity in a place no one would consider over-the-top otherwise. And you know--I'm not totally opposed to the idea as long as, you know, I can actually walk in those shoes.

Sigerson Morrison designs flats with ample, copious, over-the-top toe cleavage. His ballet flats are elongated, delicate, slim, dainty, ultra-feminine, in beautiful gleaming colors and sensual textures. They are indeed a beauty to behold. However, I'm going to stay away from these ones--indeed, I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to keep them on and I'd have to sacrifice too much of my comfort for this aethereal vision of femininity.

I'm a tall, substantial woman who likes to exercise regularly, hence, my calves are, ahem, very well defined and pretty sturdy, refusing to let themselves be encapsulated in any flimsy tall boots with narrow shafts, which seem to be the norm these days among most manufacturers.

Given that I do love knee-high boots with a purple passion, I'm constantly on the lookout for tall boots that will cater to the calf-endowed woman, such as myself. Not surprisingly, Paul Green delivers again--this time with this wing-tip knee-high boot, 'Pierre', available in black or dark brown for about $350. What I particularly like about the construction of these boots is the gored outstep, which allows for extra stretching beyond the 15" circumference. I also like the fact that the inside zipper is as long as the shaft, thus helping with that putting-on, taking-off process. Chic and practical--now, that's my style!

I loved these Arche 'Lydie' wedges the first time I saw them, and I love them now even more that the price has been sliced by about half (they're now $169). The pewter leather acccent makes the shoe, of course--the rest is standard fare Arche nubuck and the somewhat odd but not completely unattractive oversized rubber sole. I also love the stacked-heel look of the wedge; regretfully, at 2 1/2", the heel height tends to push out of my comfort zone (which tops at about 2"). Still, a beautiful shoe which I find appropriate for just about any occasion. There is also a beautiful wedge boot ('Loreto', same metallic flower motif, see below) that merits attention, especially as it's now about $100 off the original price.

Through the wonderful blogs posted by Shoesense, I've learned that:

Shoes can be both functional and stylish at the same time. (This was previously largely an oxymoron to me.)

There are a whole slew of designers who make such shoes

And finally, you do not want to have plantar fasciitis. It is quite painful (Shoesense, I feel for you) and gasp, you can't wear heels anymore.

Armed with this newfound information, I have started to take better notice of shoe designers such as Taryn Rose more and more often. Case in point, I found these cute wedges on sale at NM for $299. Sigh, I might have to brave the holiday crowds and visit NM to gives these shoes a try on.

I know Manolo Blahnik designs SOME flats here and there, and occasionally kitten heels, but let's face it: you'd feel a little gypped if your Manolos didn't have the signature 3"+ stiletto heels. Not me, though! I'm positively thrilled to see these beautiful pumps (in keeping with my newly declared holiday theme here over at Shoesense), with a manageable and positively sturdy 2" heel. They're currently on sale at Neiman Marcus for the usual astronomical price ($536, down over $200 from $765), so I'll probably pass (ahem), but that beautiful brooch and the elegant lines will haunt me for a while.

I was browsing along, as I do with my morning coffee, when I stumbled upon the cutest little pair of buckle ballet flats from Sam Edelman ('Bonnie'), perfect for cheering up even the grumpiest case of Monday blues. I say, be blue no more! These bright red satin cuties, with the oh-so-classy buckle ornament (reminescent of Roger Vivier's famous pilgrim shoes) will bring a jolt of mirth to the dreariest of days, and put a genuine sparkle even in Scrooge's squinty beady little eyes. But most importantly, they'll make you feel like a princess, and even the price (just shy of $120) won't put a dent in your good spirits. I know they brightened my morning!

I had a hard time picking which bag to write about from my collection this week so I gently asked one of my closest friends, Harry (a guy - yes!), which bag I should write about. He picked this one because it reminded him of a certain part of the female anatomy. Wonderful! I am not sure if I will ever ask for his help with this again.

Every girl needs a little bit of pink in her life and in her wardrobe. This very sweet, subtle color is easy to match with any outfit and gives the finishing feminine touch. Of course, there are many different shades and hues of pink. Hot pink and fuchsia are just some of the bolder pinks that makes those who hate pink hate it even more.

Rest assured that the kate spade rose perrin is a light rose pink, suitable for any age and lifestyle.

The white part of the bag is made of soft canvas (I'm tempted to say cotton canvas but alas, I cannot be sure) and the pink handle, pocket flaps and trim is made of leather. The gold hardware gives a beautiful finishing touch to this staple in your wardrobe. This was from, I believe, last year's collection. They were on sale earlier this year in major department stores.

Icon is one of those brands I can't help but love because of the uniqueness of the art-print on leather concept, combined with soft, supple, luscious materials, rubber sole and leather insoles with great arch support for absolute walking comfort. Naturally, I haven't tried their high heels or even wedges, so I can't speak for their comfort, but my 'Carcel Street' sneakers and my 'Illumination' skimmers are among the most comfortable pairs of shoes I own. This is not to say that some of the designs can't be a tad stodgy--but I'm inclined to forgive and forget, if only for the sheer joy of the colorful art prints. Icon makes shoes that will get you noticed anywhere--no matter wot.

The shoe above, the 'Mosaic Rose' print leather with black suede caught my attention for being particularly resplendent. It's from their latest collection and available for just under $300. I know, I know. Still, it's a beautiful shoe, and from experience I know it's well made and with plenty of arch support--just what this shoe lover dreams of.

If you don't mind owning a pair of Icons from previous collection, the Icon website allows you to have one for $99 and less--unfortunately, in a limited selection of sizes, but who knows, you might get lucky!

I was just brewing a post in which I was asking out loud the question, "What is your ultimate shoe wish for this gift season?" when--oops! I had the good fortune of gifting MYSELF the very DREAM GIFT that I was about to hope for. Hope that makes sense.

In short, my dream was to own a pair of Thierry Rabotin shoes. Thierry Rabotin used to work for Taryn Rose, until they had a non-amicable parting of ways, from what I understand. These days, from what I understand from various shoe salespersons, Taryn Rose is foraying more into fashion and putting comfort second, whereas Thierry Rabotin is unwavered in his pursuit of comfort with simple, classic cuts that will fit anywhere on the walk of life.

Thierry is famous for using the "saccheto" construction and lightweight materials such as Poron. What is "saccheto"? Well, I'm glad you asked! The answer is right there on Rabotin's website:

"What does "a sacchetto" mean? During the sewing phase, the lining, which substitutes the innersole is assembled to the upper by fixing it like a sac along its edge. It differs from the other working porcedures because it does not use a metal reinforcement and thermoplastic glue and this way the shoe becomes lighter. A lighter weight means that it becomes easier to walk, the shoe permits the natural movement of the foot since all the components that usually make it rigid are missing. During the hand assembly, the lining, for which only the best nappa is used, is fixed in two steps to the upper, conserving in this manner softness and capacity of transpiration and providing a perfect ambience for the foot. Only water solvable glues that once dry do not develop harmful vapours are employed. A shock absorbing and transpiring material is inserted between the sole and the lining, to lighten the articulations all along the foot, which thanks to its open cellular structure maintains its volume for a long time. "

I had tried a pair of his shoes and found them heavenly--just like walking on clouds. Superbly constructed, very lightweight, supremely comfortable--in short, a dream! However, the price for this foot Nirvana is quite substantial, usually between $300 and $400 (more for boots). I was forced to admire them at a distance, especially since they're almost never on sale.

This morning, however, almost on a whim, I entered the Benjamin Lovell store downtown Philadelphia--and found this this model, Colette, on sale, for $139! They originally go for $325, so you can see how I couldn't resist them, especially as they did have them in my size!

Now, let's be clear: these are not exciting shoes. They're not cutesy, or pretty, or jaw-dropping in any way. At best, they are classy and elegant, at worst, a whisker shy of stodgy. This model is quite nice, in my opinion--has the peep-toe, a classic cut, will go with virtually anything, and hopefull last a lifetime. However, the comfort is unparalleled, and just the thought of it makes me burst into song:

"I'm singing in the street--
Singing in the street,
What a glorious feeling,
It's heaven for my feet!"

Or something like that.... At any rate, highly, HIGHLY recommended....

So I've been eyeing these Espace 'Rubens' Mary Janes (gold nubuck) for quite a while now. Problem was, at $230, they were kinda out of reach.

I've been following the sales with great interest, though, and when the price pretty much hit rock-bottom ($43, or 82% off), I just couldn't resist anymore. I just had to have them. Like all the other 5 (five) Espace shoes I have, they're quite comfy (well, the exception is this red suede strappy wedge sandals where one strap gnaws away at my big toe; I'll have to have that stretched). Anyhoo, I'm wearing them right now with brown pants and a Banana Republic sweater and later when I go out I will throw on a pashmina shawl IN EXACTLY THE SAME COLOR, what are the chances of that? Colors look a bit different online than in real life (the gold/mustard color of this one is a bit deeper, could almost pass for orange)--and I didn't realize I had clothing items that are basically the same hue.

Cautionary word: They're a bit too flat, if you know what I mean--in my opinion, they can't be comfortably worn without an orthotic insert (I won't walk anywhere without mine, even when the shoes do, in fact, have arch support). Otherwise--cute as a button!

If there was one item I could add to my otherwise bloated shoe collection, it would be one pair of awesome riding boots. I can't, nor have I ever been able to, ride horses; but of course, you will necessarily laugh now-- poor soul, so naive to think fashion should actually stay true to its (original) practical purpose! Sure, and winkle-pickers were meant to pick winkles--what else now?

No matter how practically inclined I may be, I simply looooove riding boots. There's something about the sturdiness of the leather, the classic hardware details, the firm embrace of the tall shaft, the solid comfort. Of course, they're also pretty flat--why would you want to ride horses in high heels? unless you're Madonna, but let's not even go there, ok?

So, if, theoretically, I had wads of money just dying to come out from under my sofa cushions, I'd get myself a proper riding boot, not unlike this classic number from Celine, what with the beautiful leather and golden studs that are at once understated and distinctive and the ring ornament and the classic line.

This boot says that you're your own person, that you're strong and don't take no BS from no one, that you mean to walk with confidence and conquer the world and the world had better get out of your way. Love it! I'm less enamored with the price, $880, which puts it out of my reach for, oh, I don't know, forever? Still, it's nice to dream about it....

From the comments to a post by my favorite rad-fem ever, Twisty at I Blame the Patriarchy, comes this gruesome story:

"I used to be Miss Femininity. My goal was to be Miss America when I was a teen (it was not revealed to me at that age that I was not tall enough or rich enough to do so) so I got up every morning at 5 am so I could spend two hours making myself “pretty enough” to go to school, and the culmination was tottering to the bus stop in little spike heeled pumps hoping they wouldn’t catch on a crack in the sidewalk and spill me most unfemininely to the ground. Then after school, I took ballet, wore en pointe shoes, and starved myself appropriately in hopes of being the ultimate feminine slender graceful icon of beauty which would make lesser ugly females cry in despair (and of course, make all men want to protect me and take care of me and buy me a big house in the country and tenderly look after me and however many children I bore to him.)
Result - by age 19 I had arthritis in my feet so bad now I cannot wear so much as a one inch heel without suffering intense pain after a few hours, and my two smallest toes on each foot are permanently red and swollen and remain turned in and curled under even when barefoot, and thus are prone to infection if I don’t carefully dry them after every shower or whenever I get my feet wet. My wife looks at my toes frequently and mutters things about foot binding. And in spite of this sacrifice in the name of femininity and beauty, no rich man has ever taken more of an interest in me other than to offer to buy me for an evening when I looked sufficiently down-n-out and powerless.
So soliliquies in praise of the beauty of the tortured feminine foot in high heels somehow fail to impress me."

Of course, the whole blog and subsequent discussions are worth reading, but do enter at your own peril: this is a radical feminist blog of a radical feminist who espouses entirely radical feminist notions (such as 'fashion is a tool of the patriarchy'), so be advised! (I'm a hypocritical feminist by Twisty's standards, since I do love fashion, but I can't help it. I love Twisty and consider myself a feminist, but I also DO love fashion. C'est la vie, toujours ambivalent.)

PS: In case you wondered, the shoe pictured above is an 1890 English fetish shoe (really, look at those curves: who could possibly walk in it?). If you're familiar with a bit of the history of the stiletto, you'd know it has its origins in fetish wear. So, behold an early precursor!

                                                                     Fashion Feet
To add a subtle touch go slowly with well-chosen shoes and accessories. Wedges are the sexiest of '50s footwear. They work equally well with turn-up jeans, crop trousers and skirts, but can verge on tarty with micro-minis. For extra '50s sass go for red and white polka dots (Fiorucci at Poste Mistress) or girly gingham (Lulu Guinness). Even more comfy is the ubiquitous ballet flat. This is a good excuse to bag Chanel's trademark quilted pump (especially while the sales are on!) and if you need persuading, remember these are classics and thus investment buys, so you'll wear them for years to come. If you don't earn Karl Lagerfeld's salary, the budget version can be bought readily from the high street. If you're a stiletto queen go for Office's pointy kitten heels, which look irresistible with frothy prom skirts.

                                                     Pins are In
For a cheap and instant '50s fix look to the paste brooch. These look lovely on shrunken cardigans, Kirsten Dunst style. Bows, cats and fruit motifs have the most naïve charm. For evenings this look prettifies a bog-standard shift and for weddingy occasions it looks effortless with a pastel chiffon frock.

                                 Mysterious Girl
Heading for warmer climes? Holiday headwear is essential, and the '50s floppy-brimmed straw has never looked more classy. This is just the thing to glam up a flattering but dull cossie or tankini. Partner your hat with this season's big round sunnies. Not only will they protect your eyes, but they'll lend you that mysterious allure that modern visor shades simply don't offer.

                                           Picture Perfect
For beaches and picnics you need a roomy carry-all, so source a Roman Holiday-style straw tote. Team with a boat-neck tee and capri pants for that Elle Macpherson 'I so haven't tried' effect. For city slick try and get your hands on Prada's picture-postcard bag. These were the big hit from the Spring catwalk, so if your search proves fruitless, head to Russell & Bromley for its painterly canvas version.

                                                 Always Remember...
The key to effectively translating any retro trend is restraint. Resist the urge to cram too many '50s references into one outfit - the effect will be more pastiche than panache. By handpicking one or two choice '50s pieces and working them into your individual look, you'll find the result is naturally thrown together rather than strained and contrived. Now, where did I put those polka-dot ankle socks?

If you, like me, are a Mary Jane afficionado, you may, again, like me, love these Arche 'Vital' black leather Mary Janes, with wide nubuck strap and oversized buckle. The price, as is often the case with Arche shoes, stings ($329), but at least you can be guaranteed superb quality and workmanship and a high level of comfort. I particularly like the mixed-leather twist, which is somewhat unusual for Arche, a brand that, of late, has relied heavily on nubuck. Arche also prides itself with using supple 100% natural Latex soles made of Havea milk (Lactae Hevea), which provides a type of natural comfort that's supposed to be good for you. For more information about the history, concept, and manufacturing of Arche shoes (made in France), click here.

These "Prince" western-flair boots from Paul Green are currently 61% off on Zappos, going for about $143--which would be 143 of your best-spent bucks, especially if you're into the current Western-craze. I confess I'm not--I can't pull off cowboy boots or hats, heavy buckles, or suede fringes of any sort, though I thoroughly admire those who do it with style. And style is at the forefront with these boots, in a combination of suede and croc leather upper, and a user-friendly 2" heel.

I crave them so much I might as well give up my stylistic allegiances (which veer kind of all over the place but definitely away from Western). It also doesn't hurt that from my personal experience, Paul Green is a brand well-worth investing in. I have a pair of summer slides with a 1 3/4" heel, which is basically my most comfortable and versatile summer shoe. This European designer understands two things: comfort and quality. Those slides are superbly constructed and have the best arch support. They are definitely meant for walking, as are these beautiful boots.

The great Manolo the Shoeblogger posts about Pucci shoes every once in a while, with the heading, "Pucci makes the smiles!" I bet, however, that he would agree these overly sweet, overly-patterned and overly-saturated heels from Pucci make those smiles to melt tragically into a sugary-vanilla-honey-induced diabetic coma.

Of course, you can always get the approach that these are so tacky they're truly fabulous and scour the imagination (whatever's left of it when you recover from that sugar coma) for opportunities to wear them. Here's one: part of an outfit you wear at the first Antromeda 5-Earth interplanetary reception, so as not to to be outdone by all those wacky alien space costumes.

Since I waste no time expressing my rejection of high heels (everything over 2 1/2") for being, well, painfully crippling, let me clarify that I agree with the commenters on the previous post that flatter-than-Texas shoes are equally uncomfortable.

I know that because I, too, have a ridiculously high arch. A bit of heel (say, between 1" and 2") gives me much needed support (especially if it's a somewhat sturdy heel or a wedge). Even better are soles with built-in arch support: the middle section of the shoe is slightly raised just where your arch is, thus providing a comfortable resting place for the entirety of your sole.

For some strange reason, however, only a handful of brands employ this incredibly simple yet life changing technique; and regrettably, of those brands, only a few have also got the looks to make it worth it; and even more regrettably, the price tag attached to any of these brands is higher than your average shoe, and sometimes downright ridiculous.

Taryn Rose is an example of well-made shoe (lightweight materials, arch support, often pretty design); Thierry Rabotin does it even better (no, seriously: although I can't afford his shoes yet, and they don't really come on sale, I've tried them on and they are HEAVENLY); Icon shoes have good arch support, too, and so do Cole Haan (especially the G-series). Paul Green is also acceptable; I've illustrated this post with an example of a well-constructed Paul Green flat: can you see how the sole is slightly raised toward the instep? That's what I mean by arch support.

Unfortunately, as I said, the price tag for these brands reflects, I presume, the care that was put in their design.
Oh: and a well-made sneaker will come with the obligatory arch support. In fact, if you buy sneakers from a specialized store, they will first measure the height of your arch--make you leave a foot imprint on a surface, decide how raised your arch is, and then recommend the appropriate sneaker for you (they will have sneakers suitable for flat, medium-arch, and high-arched feet). Of course, if you get the wrong type of sneaker, it won't be as comfortable--duh!

Still, for problem cases like me (plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, remember?), sometimes nothing short of an orthotic support will do--a 3/4-length insert molded after my sole and which can go into any closed shoe. Which is why I can afford to have some flatter-than-pancakes shoes in my collection: the orthotics make them instantly comfortable. Of course, it doesn't work for really flat sandals, which are really hurting my feet. Open toe and open back shoes can't accommodate orthotics, and for those I really need a bit of heel and arch support as well.

My orthotics are pretty wonderful in the sense that they not only provide arch support, but properly align my foot bones, thus correcting gait and posture problems (the way you stand and walk has, of course, repercussions on your spine), and preventing the dreaded foot pain (which is why I got them in the first place). Again, the drawback for the orthotics: the price tag (hovers between $350 and $400 for a custom made orthotic, which is also not covered by health insurance), but that's somewhat alleviated by the fact that they practically last a lifetime and you just need to replace the lining every few years, which isn't nearly as expensive.

If you want to try a walking life with orthotic support without breaking the bank, I've read some research that supports the fact that any well-made ready-to-wear orthotic insert will help--and they will also cost 10 or 20 times less than the custom-made ones. Who knows, you may find your perfect fit right out of a $9.95 box!

For about the last month or so my quest has been to find a great pair of flat shoes. As I said in an earlier blog, Im bad with shoes. Because usually, I'm wearing the same pair. And I'm just unbelievably indecisive once I get to the store to find a new pair. I don't know what it is; I know what I want until the minute I step into the shoe department. And then I have an issue with color. I have to have an interchangable pair of brown and black shoes, just because I'm so anal about which colors go better with black (white, red, purple) and which ones go with brown (beige, cream, blue, earth tones). Of course, these are just my opinions on color, but it really bothers me to mix them. Last winter I bought the same pair of boots in both black and brown. This year I promised myself I'd get something different; variety is the spice of life, I firmly believe that (although no one would know it when it comes to my shoe collection).

So what do I end up walking out of the store with with? The same pair of shoes, once again, in two different colors. Sigh. Blame it on Gottschalks, I just couldn't manage to find another pair I liked. In fact, I pretty much settled on these. They were a good buy though; they're pretty comfortable and look cute with most of my outfits. The first pair are actually more of a camel color instead of brown. They're pretty bright, and really stand out, but work with the right outfit.

Both shoes are Marilyn Stuart, from Gottschalks and Zappos.com.

So I was wearing these beautiful Claudia Ciuti wedge boots last night and was feeling darn good about myself, you know? I mean, dark brown studded suede, high-ish but comfortable wedge, long skirt, and even a little make-up. The wedges are about 2 1/2 inch high, which isn't very high, of course, but if they weren't wedges but itsy-bitsy-skinny heels, I couldn't wear them at all. The wedge gives me some support--and officially turns me into a 6 ft 1" Amazon (yep, I'm already 5' 10 1/2").

One of our companions, however, a teeny chain smoker with luscious locks, was wearing these towering heels--4 1/2" platforms, or perhaps even higher. I normally don't admire high heels, but tend to frown upon them as being, you guessed it, painful and crippling instruments of torture for women. However, these particular heels were so beautiful I couldn't help but compliment her. Turns out both of us had good taste: they were Prada, caramel-colored brogue-inspired style, with a mile-high heel which my passionate interlocutor said she needed for two reasons: one, she's only 5'1", two, she gets back problems if she walks around in less than a 4" heel (3" on a bad day).

Now, I'd never heard of this, especially when coupled with the assertion that sneakers kill her back (really???), and even though I suspected a tiny hint of histrionics in the story (about 5 foot 1 inch of histrionics, to be precise), I chose to believe her; after all--who am I to tell people what they should fell comfortable in?

But, as I was walking home in my modest 2 1/2 wedges, which were still about 1 inch higher than the highest heels I've sported of late, oh, irony of ironies! Just as I was starting to wonder whether higher heels were maybe good for me after all--my back started to kill me.

Let's take the flats in the image here (I'm starting with flats because, as I've mentioned elsewhere, I can't really wear high heels). They're just a pair of flats, a little over-embellished and gaudy and in general not to my taste, but perhaps for others they may look fabulously stylish--and that's fine, others can probably pull it off.

That's not however, the reason I will never buy these shoes. The real reason is that they're a brand I dislike in general, and whose founder I have blah-to-zero feelings for: Baby Phat, by Kimora Lee Simmons.

There are other so-called brands that are instant deal-breakers for me. Anything Paris Hilton, for example: I'm afraid that wearing anything her skankiferous gaze has rested upon (I have no illusion that she's actually laboring at the drawing board for whatever bags or perfume she's trying to sell) will instantly pulverize me. Or anything Jessica Simpson: even though some of her shoes look decent in that "I stole this design from those really expensive shoes I'm otherwise wearing" way, I can't escape the feeling that they're branded with those collagen lips and the blonde vacant stare. And it's all coming for someone who's famous for being famous (seriously, why else is she famous?). I'm also staying away from anything J Lo--simply because my retina was permanently damaged after seeing her lingerie collection. Oh, and the only one of her perfumes I had the curiosity to smell was over-the-top sweet.

I guess I can't bring myself to let women I could in no way take as role models in general be style arbiters for any aspect of my fashion persona. And besides, it always puzzles me that none of these people actually seem to wear their own brands--what, are they ashamed to be seen in shoes that only cost $70 instead of $700, or wearing anything else but the latest "it" bag from Chloe or Prada? What kind of message does that send to their customer base? But I digress.

Now, of course, there are exceptions. I don't hate all celebrity labels. I simply loved Isabella Rossellini's "Manifesto" perfume. I approached with caution Sarah Jessica Parker's "Lovely" fragrance, but I became hooked--it suits me so well, I'm now at my second 3-oz bottle. That's partly because these women did, in fact, have something to say, and in general are damn good actresses with a great sense of style. And a sophisticated sense of smell, if I may add.

Unlike the Britney Spears fragrances, which really left me cold. Oh, and although I like and admire Beyonce, it will be a cold day in hell before I buy her lavishly embellished stilettos. I'm the stiletto's natural enemy, in fact: crippling, uncomfortable, restrictive, prone to cause all sorts of foot deformities and ankle and knee problems. No, thanks.

I'm also staying away from certain brands which, although not celebrity-endorsed, still offend my fashion sensibilities in some way. For example, Mephisto or Dansko or Clarks. I abhor Crocs. And any shoe made of all man-made materials is out, too.

I realize I may come across and prejudiced and biased and whatnot--but you know what? That's fashion. We all have our secret prejudices. And that's ok, imho. That's why fashion is fun and diverse and exciting: we all see something different in it.

How about you? What, or who, are your deal breakers when it comes to designer or celebrity brands?
Sale Alert: Neiman Marcus One-Week Sale

In case you haven't seen it already, Neiman Marcus online has a sale going on for the week, which means taking 30-40% off even clearance items. That means rock-bottom prices, which is basically the one time a year when I get really, really interested in NM wares. For example, these adorable Delman skimmers are only $62, down from $175.

Lots of other apparel discounts await the fashion-for-less enthusiast. The catch? A limited range of sizes, of course, and even those few selections are dwindling by the hour. So hurry up and grab something by Sunday--I'm sure there's something in there for everyone. I, for one, have my heart set on a preppy grey cotton ensemble that seems to me perfect for indoor holiday wear; and yes, you read correctly, for once, I'm not going to buy shoes.

IF:

1) I were to choose ONE pair of shoes for the fall; and

2) I could actually wear 3-inch heels; and

3) I had $570 burning a hole in my pocket,

THEN I would definitely go for these exquisite pumps from Robert Clergerie. Sure, Clergerie can produce a lot of clunkers (see these blah creations for yourself), but when he gets it right, oh boy, does he make my heart flutter! As in the presence of these chunky heels, which I actually saw in all their glory in a store downtown: smooth, beautiful suede upper, braided leather overlay (available in two colors, amber, shown, and cafe), peep-toe, and overall awesomeness.

And now excuse me as I go drool over them a little bit more.

For most women, there is something about shoes that keeps us going back for more and more. This is evidenced by the sheer quantity of shoes in our closet (check out the nice collection Shoesense has). Now, I am also guilty of having a shoe fetish, but was relieved to find that I am not alone in this category, nor am I the worst culprit.

While surfing the web today, I came across an actual shoe museum, which houses over 10,000 shoes!!! Here is some history behind the Bata shoe museum which I read on SeenandHeard.ca:

"Sonja Bata began to gather samples of traditional and creative footwear from around the world after she married Tomas Bata, the Czech shoe magnate, in 1946. By 1979, she had more shoes than could be possibly stored under the bed, so the Bata family established the Bata Shoe Museum Foundation, and started working towards a permanent home for the collection."

Wow!! If I'm ever in Toronto, I am so going to this museum. For those lucky enough to live nearby or are planning a trip in the general area, there is an exhibit going on until Jan 2007 entitled "Icons of Elegance: Influential Shoe Designers of the 20th Century". The collection features such famous artwork like the Ferragamo rainbow platform shoe and the Vivienne Westwood green 'moc-croc' platform shoe. There's also a rather interesting grass and flower sandal by Beth Levine on display (see pictures included in this blog).

The literal definition of shoe ornament

The definition of ornament is "an accessory, article, or detail used to beautify the appearance of something to which it is added or of which it is a part" . (from dictionary.com)

This most definitely fits the bill when I think of shoe ornaments. Shoes are a vital accessory that can be used to elongate the figure, give us height, and generally complete and compliment an outfit (if worn correctly).

However, I never took this to mean the liternal definition of ornament until today. I happened to see this shoe ornament on sale at Nordstroms. Wow, I thought, only $16?!? There must be some mistake or maybe it is my lucky day. Well, the secret behind the great price soon revealed itself. It is literally a shoe (as in Xmas) ornament! The ornament is crafted so well, that at just a casual glance, my eyes had played tricks on me. This is such a cool ornament, that I might just have to get myself a few of these "shoes", which are so well priced. Giggles.

**Updated: Here are some more shoes at the Met Museum.

I spend roughly 2-5 hours each day surfing the web. Sometimes I wonder if I suffer from an internet addiction disorder. (It's scary, some of the symptoms I can related to)!

As if the daily indulgence of online news, celebrity gossip, politics, health, and science were not bad enough, I also puruse shopping sites too often and that has a direct detrimental effect on the pocketbook. So imagine the mixed emotions when I discovered, gasp, a new online shoe ecommerce site called PiperLime. Piperlime is developed by none other than the company that produces the Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic line. I was happy to find another site where I could indulge in window shopping without the sometimes watchful eye or pressure of a saleperson over my shoulder. Plus, the site has great detailed shots of each shoe from many different angles. This is supremely important to me. I once bought a couch based off a small 4x4 inch sample. Imagine my surprise when the couch arrived more flowery and green than I had anticipated. I digress. The shoes on this site are all moderately priced. The brand selection isn't as extensive as shoes.com or zappos.com though. Right now there are approximately 100 brands including Aerosoles, Steve Madden, Birkenstock, Hush Puppies, Kenneth Code, Betsey Johnson, etc. There are also some some upper scale brands like Taryn Rose,Betsey Johnson, Charles David, and more are supposedly on the way, What is missing are customer reviews. This is important especially since I desire both comfort and style (the latter has priority over the former) and often rely on user feedback to help me gauge this. No big deal, though. It means a few extra trips to the post office since the site, like its predecessors, offers free shipping and returns.

Sigh, I think my 2-5 hour indulgence has just increased to 2.5-5.5 hours/day.

**Update: I found a coupon. Save 10% off your first order if you use your Gap, Banana Republic or Old Navy card. Coupon code TREAT. Through 12/31.

This is the latest pair of shoes I bought, about two days ago. As much as I love fashion I'll just confess righ there and righ now; I'm not much of a shoe person. Shocker, I know, especially since most women LOVE them some shoes. I wore the same pair of flip flops just about all summer long, and now I'm trying to get myself out of that style rut. Variety is the spice of life!

I got this pair at Payless; they were on sale for $16.99. I think they're pretty cute and nice looking for such a cheap price...except the heel. The heel has all these weird ridges on them that I'm not to happy about, and it looks plastic too, but I can deal with it. I've got myself on a budget right now (which is like a new frontier for me) and I was happy to find these. I can't wear my strappy wedge heeled sandals all winter long, even if it IS 75 degrees outside in California. So yes, these are a steal, and it will keep me from wearing the same pair of boots all winter long!

These adorable canvas with kid leather trim skimmers from Brunomagli are today 72% off, retailing for just under $75! (aah! I heart Zappos!). The style is typical Brunomagli--simple yet sophisticated, breezy yet elegant.. Given the brand, you can expect top-notch quality. A word of advice, though., for those of you with wider feet: this is not for you. I have a pair of Brunomagli in my size and let me tell you, they do run narrow--I have a little bit a problem with my medium foot, and I plan to have them stretched.

When I posted a list of my shoes yesterday, I felt not unlike an
alcoholic must feel at an AA meeting when she discloses her weekly
drinking habits. Hi, I'm Cristina, and I'm a shoe addict.

I can't say I'm totally ashamed that I owned so many
shoes, but the thought of giving in to so much consumerism is nagging
me. In other words, you know, I'd be all right with only, say, 50
pairs, if you know what I mean :)

Lisa C. has astutely observed that I seem to favor some brands over others, such as Taryn Rose, Espace, or Clergerie.

I do have 4 or 5 pairs of those because of a combination of three factors:

1) COMFORT: they tend to be more comfortable than other brands

2) STYLE: they tend to be stylish AT THE SAME TIME as comfortable

3) SALE SERENDIPITY: I happened to find them at particularly advantageous sale prices at the very moment I was rebuilding my shoe wardrobe in order to accommodate my newly acquired foot affliction (plantar fasciitis/ heel spur).

By far, the most comfortable shoes I own, apart from a pair of Icon sneakers and my Born boots, are Taryn Rose shoes. Although, apparently, she's taking the brand toward more of a fashion-feel than a comfort-based philosophy (thus losing a lot of her initial clientele), the shoes I have are "old school" Taryn Rose, in the sense that comfort is the primary player. In all honesty, some of her shoes do look stodgy, but the ones I have are really cute, feminine, and quite stylish; of course, on top of everything, they are lightweight, well-made, and supremely comfortable. (Let's just say that she understands the notion of arch support better than any other fashion shoemaker out there). My 3" heel Taryn Rose pumps are the only high heels that I can wear for an extended time without the excruciating pain that develops in the ball of the foot after a while. Well worth the $115 I paid for them, which was at the time 70% off. In fact, I could only afford to buy Taryn Rose shoes when they were 70% off or more in my size, which happened once on Zappos, once on Nordstroms.com, and twice on eBay. So, if you have the opportunity to get a pair, and can afford it, I would not hesitate. My Taryn Rose shoes are among my best investments.

With the Clergerie and Espace (which is really still part of Studio Clergerie, only cheaper--where Clergerie shoes retail for over $400, Espace hover in the $200 area)--it was a combination of loving the style, loving the comfort, and loving the price. Zappos had some really great deal for these brands for a while (I mean, $20 for a $200 sandal in my size? why, I can't let that slip away!). Due to Zappos' super-friendly return policies, it was really easy for me to try some brands and decide I really like the fit. These two brands just clicked--the style was to my taste, the quality was superb, the fit was excellent, the comfort the same, and Zappos kept it interesting with great sale prices.

Other brands that are known for their comfort are not, unfortunately, known for their style. I could only stomach one pair of red Mephisto flats--because they looked decent and the price was rock-bottom ($40 for a $240 shoe). I like them, but not as much as my red Espace flats!
These days I NEVER, ever, pay full price for a pair of shoes. I like to be stylish, but I have little desire to be trendy, so I don't rush to get the fall collection of some designer the moment it's out. After all, these shoes are expensive and I fully plan on getting the most wear out of them--even seasons from now, when they've long ceased to be novelty. In most instances, unless I'm really desperate for a pair out of necessity, I'm willing to hold off for the prices to come down (even though there's always the risk that they run out of stock). But my patience is usually rewarded--this way I could get, for example, the green beaded Clergerie slides pictured here for about $50 as opposed to over $300. Now, that's a bargain, don't you think?

My husband is one of those people who has a personal relationship with his shoemaker. (He has a personal relationship with his tailor and eyebrow-waxer, too, but that's another story. And between you and me, I'm glad I don't have to remind him to take care of that unibrow.)

I, on the other hand, know of what shoemakers do only vicariously, through him. I never was particularly inclined to attach taps to the heels and tips of my shoes (in clear only!), or give my shoes a proper shine, change their shoestrings, or resole them. Au contraire, a badly broken shoe usually meant--you guessed it!--an opportunity to buy a new pair.

Recently, however, I acknowledged, grudgingly, that shoemakers can and do make a difference.

See, I purchased these Donald Pliner "Cybel" loafers as a chic, sporty pair for city-wear. I didn't want something too sneaker-like (in general, not really my style) and these fit the bill. They were colorful, simple but elegant, looked comfortable, and they were by Donald Pliner, which is known for quality and comfort. Also, they were 55% off on sale. I'm a sale whore, what can I say.

Unfortunately, the high cut of the shoe didn't go well at all with my high arch+high instep combo. In fact, I could barely slip them on. They cut deep into my instep, to the point that it became really painful. Still, not deterred by the ill-fit at home, I decided to wear them outside to break them in (they have suede uppers--how hard could it be?), so I couldn't return them. Breaking them in turned out to be pretty hard. 'Excruciating' comes to mind.

So, I was stuck with a pretty and well-made but impractical shoe--which goes to show how much credence you can put in those online reviews (which for this particular shoe were very good). Each woman's experience is unique. The stiff instep problem was not mentioned once in the reviews on Zappos, and even more puzzling, over 70% of the reviewers described the shoe as having "excellent arch support." Why, these shoes are flat as a pancake! Do they even know what arch support is? Sheesh! (My orthotics take care of my arch problems, but still.)

I just had to consider having them stretched at a shoemaker's, you know? After all, they had cost over $80 and were now bound to be stuck in my shoe closet for ever. Luckily, I discovered that overcoming my fear of shoemakers really paid off. For only $4, they stretched them for me into a comfortable, relaxed fit. Nay, even luxurious. Yes, a luxurious fit describes this well. Now I can trot around downtown for miles without the dreaded instep chafing (which, by the by, happened with thin or thick socks, no exception).

I think I'm going to form a personal relationship with my shoemaker, too. Totally worth it!

I'm no stranger to foot pain--in fact, it's foot pain that prompted me to write about shoes in the first place. As a freshly diagnosed sufferer of plantar fasciitis and heel spurs and as a lifelong shoe lover, I started searching for footwear that would be both fashionable and comfortable. I gave away almost all of my high heel collection, got rid of the rest of my painful shoes, and started snooping around for shoes that would treat me right in every way, accommodating my high arch, with the subsequent elevated instep, my heel pain, my newly acquired orthotics, and my sense of style. I've documented this search elsewhere--and I will continue to do it on StylePad.

Although I've finally come to appreciate comfort first and foremost in shoes (at least in the shoes I buy!), there are shoe abominations out there that, despite their claim to comfort, are nevertheless painful to look at. And aesthetic pain is just as bad as, if not worse than, foot pain, don't you agree?

So despite the claims of Z-Coil wearers that the ugliness on the right (the "Taos Clog") relieves foot pain caused by heel spurs and what not, guess what? You'll never see me in it. Because some things, especially when they manage to somehow be uglier than 10 pairs of Birkenstocks and 10 Crocs put together, should never see the light of day.

In my humble opinion.

These Balenciaga pumps look like they are from the future. I imagined that, in the future, they might be popular if our feet evolve to be a different shape. Apparently, it seems that there are some that have evolved. I'm not sure which Olsen sister is wearing these, but I was shocked them being worn on not one, but two occassions.

No sooner had I posted my previous entry on the MJ booties that I came across these MJ distressed silver T-straps (just under $370 on Zappos). Why, anybody who knows me would instantly recognize my obsession with 1) shiny things; 2) low-heeled things; 3) Mary-Janes. I mean, seriously: a shiny Mary-Janeish (square cut vamp, no less!) with a sensible heel? Yoo-hoo! All that's missing is the sale (alas, that price is not yet budget-friendly).

As an aside, these would also make excellent sensible wedding shoes--you know, the kind you can actually dance in all night without the pain. (Hey, my wedding shoes were actually flats and allowed me to work that dance floor into the wee hours of the night.)

Or at least that should be the name of this divine pair of Marc Jacobs booties. Marc Jacobs is one of the few designers in my book who can never do wrong. He has the touch of gold: almost everything he designs is beautiful, youthful, chic, hip, colorful, eye-catching.

These suede booties (hot trend!) sport a shiny dotted red bow in front (a design he used on other flats, too), instantly turning the wearer into a hot walking package, all wrapped up to go. They're a bit high for me (3 1/2 inch heel), though the Zappos reviewer deemed them quite comfortable. I'm sold, however, on the rich, deep teal color which will make you noticed wherever you go. Available for just under $400 at Zappos.

I've never been a fan of Sienna (after the Jude Law cheating aftermath, I couldn't understand why she would stick around with a balding, middle aged man). However, I have to admit Sienna does have style. She wears the triple buckle Chloe Silverado Boot so well with this tuxedo jacket. It definitely has a certain flair to it.

Available at Net-A-Porter for $1,155.

There's something about Dries van Noten shoes that makes me irresistibly drawn to them. They\'re always elegant and sophisticated but never really \'girly\'. They\'re not cute or pretty in the conventional sense of the word--rather, they have a majestic, solid, continental kind of elegance that creates its own brand of timeless. Always exquisitely handcrafted, with an attention to comfort (and you\'ve GOT to respect a shoe designer who actually pays attention to comfort!), Dries van Noten shoes will get you noticed--and more than that, will get you the kind of respect subliminally bordering on awe. For yes, they are awesome--just like these stout leather pumps in an unperturbed shade of gold and an exaggerated chunky heel that will firmly get your foot in the door. Also available in a rich shade of black , for $410.

I'm really beginning to think that two heads are better than one. Earlier, I posted a blog on a dynamic duo that designs the Hayden and Harnett handbags.

Well, recently I became educated on yet another couple that are working together to create the next new force in accessories, but this time for shoes instead of handbags. The Loeffler Randall brand has been nominated for a 2006 CFDA award in emerging accessories design and I can certainly see why. The line is stylish, elegant, and very sleek. No wonder tabloid topping celebs such as Lindsay Lohan have been seen wearing the Loeffler Randall Matilde boots (although I have no idea how Lindsay is able to keep the boots so white!). Their silk flats are also gorgeous - check out some picts on Instyle.

For your viewing pleasure, you can find the entire Fall 2006 collection at Loeffler Randall.com (big pdf file alert) or purchase select pieces at Shopbop, PM, NM, or Bergdorf Goodman.

Oh, did I mention that their handbags are also to die for?

We're all more familiar with Isabella Fiore's beautiful bags, but her shoes are as bit as whimsical, vibrant, and cutting edge. Case in point: these Lauper flats, which are both romantic and spunky and would be perfect for a leisurely autumn walk in the park with your beloved (followed by cup of warm cinnamon chocolate in a fancy cafe).

They have three braided leather rings on the vamp, contrast whipstich trim, and embroidery on the back ("Love" and flowers). In my book, it doesn't get sweeter than that! Available in rust (shown) or chocolate, only $217 at Nordstrom's, or $329 (regular price) at Zappos. Being flats, they also promise to be rather comfortable. Enjoy!
